Visit HostUpon

HostUpon is a Canadian web hosting company founded in 2007 and headquartered in Toronto. They offer shared, reseller, VPS, and dedicated server plans, along with domain registration and website migration services.

The company hosts over 10,000 customers worldwide and operates from a single data center in Toronto. This makes it particularly suitable for Canadian users or those targeting a Canadian audience who want low-latency connections. While its customer support has been responsive and helpful in our interactions with them, overall performance in our tests was average at best, and in some cases fell short of competitors in the same price range.

HostUpon Pricing

HostUpon Pricing

An honest look at HostUpon's pricing, renewals, and hidden fees.

4.4

HostUpon's monthly rates are on the higher side. Committing to a longer term, especially the 3-year plan, can bring substantial savings. Renewal prices increase after the initial term and vary depending on the length of your chosen plan, so it is worth calculating the total cost over time before signing up.

During checkout, several add-ons are offered, but none are pre-selected. This helps avoid accidental charges. However, these extras are rather expensive. For example, an SSL certificate costs $79.95, and a dedicated IP address is $48 per year. It is best to consider carefully whether you actually need these before adding them to your cart.

While the overall pricing is somewhat high, HostUpon is transparent about all costs and billing terms, with no hidden fees. Payment options include Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, and certified checks. The company also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, although some fees such as domain registration and SSL certificates are non-refundable, so it is important to review the refund policy before purchase.

HostUpon advertises a 99.9% uptime guarantee, which is standard in the web hosting industry. In our monitoring over several months, uptime was generally reliable and often reached 100%. There were occasional short dips slightly below the 99.9% mark, but these were infrequent and did not significantly impact overall availability.

Compared to competitors, HostUpon's uptime performance is solid. Some providers do offer higher guarantees or provide service credits if downtime exceeds their SLA, but our experience with HostUpon showed no major interruptions. A brief outage last quarter was resolved within a few hours, and overall reliability has remained steady. As always, it is wise to keep regular backups and have a recovery plan in place to minimize the impact of any unexpected downtime.

Data Center Locations

HostUpon operates a single data center in Toronto, Canada. This location is ideal for websites targeting Canadian visitors, as it helps reduce latency and improve performance for local users. Additionally, Canada's strong data privacy regulations may appeal to businesses prioritizing security and compliance.

However, having only one data center limits geographic flexibility. Customers cannot choose different regions for hosting, which may impact latency for international visitors. Businesses requiring global reach or redundancy might need to explore providers with multiple data center options.

HostUpon Data Center Locations

HostUpon has data centers in the following countries:

Time to First Byte (TTFB)

HostUpon Time to First Byte (TTFB) Results

To evaluate HostUpon's performance, we measured Time to First Byte (TTFB) from multiple global locations. As expected, results were best in Canada and the United States, where HostUpon operates its single data center in Toronto. Test locations in Montreal and several U.S. regions consistently delivered TTFB under 150 ms, with the fastest response recorded in Northern Virginia at 120 ms.

In Europe, results were generally good, averaging between 330–430 ms across major cities such as London, Paris, Frankfurt, and Milan. This level of latency is acceptable for most websites, but noticeably slower compared to North American tests.

Performance declined further in regions farther from Toronto. South America returned TTFB between 460–490 ms, while Asia-Pacific locations such as Tokyo, Singapore, and Sydney ranged from 550–740 ms. The slowest results were observed in India (874–933 ms) and the Middle East and Africa (680–785 ms).

HostUpon delivers strong performance in Canada and the U.S., decent results in Europe, and noticeably weaker speeds in other regions. This makes the service best suited for websites targeting a Canadian or North American audience, while international websites may benefit from a host with more diverse data center options.

Storage

HostUpon offers unlimited SSD storage on its shared hosting plans, ensuring fast performance and reliability. However, like most hosting providers, "unlimited" comes with fair usage restrictions.

While general website storage isn't capped, HostUpon limits media storage (videos, music, and images) to 50GB. Additionally, accounts must be used for website-related purposes—file storage or file-sharing activities are not allowed.

For most users, these limits won't be an issue, but those managing large media-heavy sites should ensure their storage needs align with HostUpon's policies.

Bandwidth

HostUpon provides unmetered bandwidth on its shared hosting plans, meaning there are no set limits on how much data your website can transfer each month. This makes it ideal for websites experiencing traffic fluctuations, as there are no overage charges or strict data caps.

However, as with most shared hosting providers, bandwidth usage must align with fair use policies. While HostUpon does not impose specific limits, excessive traffic that negatively impacts server performance may lead to restrictions or a recommendation to upgrade to a more suitable plan, such as VPS or dedicated hosting.

For most personal and small business websites, HostUpon's bandwidth offering is more than sufficient, providing flexibility without unexpected fees.

Migrating to HostUpon

HostUpon provides free website migration with its hosting plans, making it easy for customers to transfer their sites without additional costs. This service is especially beneficial for users who may not have the technical expertise to handle migrations on their own.

The migration process is straightforward—customers simply submit a request through their client area, and HostUpon's support team takes care of the entire transfer, including files, databases, and emails. The company aims to ensure minimal downtime, helping users transition smoothly.

However, there are some limitations. HostUpon's free migration service primarily supports cPanel-to-cPanel transfers. While other types of migrations may still be accommodated, they could involve additional complexities. There's no explicit mention of size restrictions, but users with large or complex websites should consult HostUpon's support team for guidance.

Backups

HostUpon provides weekly backups for shared hosting accounts, offering basic data protection in case of unexpected issues. However, backup restorations must be requested through customer support, as there is no self-service option for restoring backups via cPanel. This process ensures that restorations are handled properly but may lead to delays compared to hosts that offer instant recovery options.

For users seeking more frequent backups and greater control, HostUpon offers a Premium Backup Service, which is only available on the Premium Plan. This service provides extensive backups of website files, databases, and emails for up to seven days, allowing users to restore data from specific points in time. The backups are stored on a remote server, and restorations can be requested at any time.

Email

HostUpon's email hosting allows unlimited email accounts on Business and Premium plans, while the Starter plan is limited to 10 accounts. All plans share a 10GB total storage limit, which may be restrictive for users with large email volumes.

To maintain server performance, HostUpon enforces sending and receiving limits, though specific details are not publicly listed. Businesses with high email traffic may need a third-party solution for greater flexibility.

SSL Certificates

HostUpon does not provide free automated SSL certificates, but users can manually install Let's Encrypt SSL if needed.

For those seeking higher security, HostUpon offers paid SSL certificates, including a Private SSL that is included with the Premium Plan (for the primary domain only).

Couldn't even try the hosting

Their pricing looked great, but unfortunately, I couldn't even start using their service. I tried to pay but they wouldn't accept any of my cards! I contacted my bank and they said everything was fine on their end. Frustrating experience!

Great for My Photography Site!

I've been using HostUpon for my photography portfolio and it's been a great experience. The pricing is unbeatable, especially for the resources you get. Sometimes it can be a bit slow, but I mostly just archive my photos, so it's not a huge deal. Their customer support is helpful and they were always quick to respond.

Don't waste your time and money

Every time I tried to update WordPress or any of the plugins, it would take foreveeer. Actions would always timeout and fail so I had to repeat the process multiple times until the update completes. And I had to do it for every single update. Support wasn't of much help either. As soon as I moved my websites to a different host everything became blazingly fast. Go figure!
